Erotic Romance for Beginners

As a an author of both romance, erotic romance, and erotica I often get asked what the difference between the three are. It’s hard to say because what I may view as being super steamy kink is another readers boring Sunday afternoon, and what I might consider tame is another readers wildest fantasy that can only be whispered in the dark. Our societies view of sex and sexuality is ever changing, especially in a post sexual revolution world. Women are told by their favorite magazines and day time talk show personalities that it is ok to have fantasies, ok to have desire, and ok to go after their own sexual gratification.

With that said, many women are still hesitant to give erotica a try because they don’t want to waste their time and money on a book that might be a written version of cheesy 70’s porn. I’ll let you in on a little secret, erotic romance is just a romance novel with the bedroom door left open and the lights on. You get to see into the characters minds as they join physically as close as a man and woman possibly can, trust each other with their bodies and emotions. It can be beautiful, it can be hot, it can be raw, but for it to be erotic romance it has to contribute to the plot and the storyline.

Let me try and break it down for you in an example. I’ll do the same short scene in sweet romance, bodice ripper romance, and erotic romance.

Sweet

Jane gazed up into Jack’s face as he looked out over their land, pride suffusing the hard angles of his mouth. He looked down at her and love, pure and simple, surged through her. As the sunset over the home where their children would someday laugh and play he kissed her and she held him close. Her man, her life, her husband.

Bodice Ripper

Jane gazed up into Jack’s face as he looked out over their land, pride suffusing the hard angles of his mouth. He looked down at her and love, pure and simple, surged through her. As the sunset over the home where their children would someday laugh and play. Her body flushed and grew needy as his eyes grew darkened with passion. His lips brushed over her own and she opened to him like a rose unfurling it’s petals to the sun, moaning deep in her throat as he turned the kiss demanding. His manhood pressed into her skirts and the area between her legs grew damp with want. She held him close, her man, her life, her husband.

Erotic Romance

Jane gazed up into Jack’s face as he looked out over their land, pride suffusing the hard angles of his mouth. He looked down at her and love, pure and simple, surged through her. As the sunset over the home where their children would someday laugh and play. She smiled up at him as he held her close, one clever hand inching its way up her ribcage to gently cup her breast. Her heart beat harder as his gaze turned intense, the look on his face alone hardening her nipples into aching nubs. He ran lazy circles around her breast, never quite touching where she wanted, where she needed him to. She tried to grab his hand and make him touch her, but he easily dodged her grasp and instead drew her in for a kiss. Their lips met and she opened for him, groaning into his mouth as his tongue stroked against hers. He shifted so one of his firm thighs was between her legs and he pressed up, all that hard muscle rubbing against her clit trapped behind her jeans. She stiffened as he slowly rocked her along his thigh and delighted in the way that her arousal always drove him crazy. When she cupped his erection through his pants he muttered an oath under his breath and swept her up into his arms, carrying her back to their home. She pressed her cheek against his chest and thanked God for sending him to her.

I hope you have a better idea of what erotic romance has to offer and thank you for taking a moment out of your day to read my post. 🙂

Ann is Queen of the Castle to her wonderful husband and three sons in the mountains of West Virginia. In her past lives she’s been an Import Broker, a Communications Specialist, a US Navy Civilian Contractor, a Bartender/Waitress, and an actor at the Michigan Renaissance Festival. She also spent a summer touring with the Grateful Dead-though she will deny to her children that it ever happened.

From a young age she’s been fascinated by myths and fairytales, and the romance that often was the center of the story. As Ann grew older and her hormones kicked in, she discovered trashy romance novels. Great at first, but she soon grew tired of the endless stories with a big wonderful emotional buildup to really short and crappy sex. Never a big fan of purple prose, throbbing spears of fleshy pleasure and wet honey pots make her giggle, she sought out books that gave the sex scenes in the story just as much detail and plot as everything else-without using cringe worthy euphemisms. This led her to the wonderful world of Erotic Romance, and she’s never looked back.

Now Ann spends her days trying to tune out cartoons playing in the background to get into her ‘sexy space’ and has learned to type one handed while soothing a cranky baby.

Thanks Ann, for giving us 3 great examples. There’s a big difference from sweet to erotic romance.
Please don’t enter me in the contest. I just finished reading Sensation Play. Loved it!
    Great blog!!

Sensation Play sounds like a story I will love. I really enjoy the 1NS series. I get more out of erotic romance that I ever have out of sweet romance. As a reader I am thrilled that erotic romance has become more mainstream. It means that I won’t run out of great stories to read!

Loved the article, other than the first picture, which may give me nightmares. But it takes all kinds to make the world go round and it would be a really boring place if it didn’t. Reading always takes me somewhere and erotic romance is a great place to visit.

  4. Timitra

Very informative and interesting post, thanks for sharing it with us Ann!!!

  5. Mel B

LOL! The picture nearly cracked me up! I remember seeing those so many years ago. 🙂

Thanks for the 3 examples. Sometimes it gets difficult to explain the difference between Erotic and Erotica. I am definitely in love with both. I love the 1Ns series. I have read several and found them highly enjoyable.

    I would love Sensation Play.

I’ve been a romance reader my whole adult life, starting out with all those sweeter romance stories, and graduating to the more erotic romances that I now adore.

Thanks for the chance to win a copy of Sensation Play.
