Summary:

Loving your best friend is hard . . . especially when he’s marrying someone else.

On the surface, Steve Campbell seems to have it all: a beautiful home, a snazzy car, and a dream job as one of the country’s top 3-D optics researchers. But underneath, he’s restless and dissatisfied, tired of empty encounters with leggy lab assistants and endless evenings alone.

A chance meeting with a handsome escort lifts Steve’s spirits and opens his eyes to his long-repressed attraction to men—and his love for his best friend and business partner, Connor Morrison.

Connor might’ve loved Steve like that once, but now it’s too late for their happily ever after; Connor’s about to ask his boyfriend to marry him. Fortunately, it’s never too late to learn about yourself, and maybe Steve can find a happy ending on his own.

The Review:

Cat Grant’s Doubtless is a delightful journey of self discovery for Steve Campbell. Despite his professional success, Steve is lonely and unhappy. An unexpected encounter with escort Dylan Monroe is just what Steve needs to begin transforming his life.

Although he is quite successful in his career, Steve Campbell’s personal life is pretty much a mess. His confidence is shaken by some recent rejections which in turn brings up some unresolved issues from his past. He is a little lost and lonely and not too self-aware in the beginning, but as the story progresses he begins to understand a lot about himself, his relationships and his feelings for his close friend and colleague Connor Morrison.

Dylan Monroe is not the stereotypical male escort. He is confident, comfortable with who he is and he knows what he wants out of life and more importantly, how to get it. Although theirs is a business relationship, he genuinely cares about Steve. Dylan’s insightful observations and encouragement become the foundation for the changes Steve makes in his life.

Doubtless is a beautifully written character driven short story. It is not a romance, but it is an compelling journey of self awareness. The ending is positive and uplifting with Cat Grant leaving the door open for another book where Steve will finally find his happily ever after.

  4. I really liked how your review was clear that this book was about a compelling journey of self awareness and not a romance, which was summarized nicely in the last paragraph.

Thank you so much, Jess. I thought that some readers might want to know it’s not a traditional romance. I am glad that Ms. Grant showed the importance of fixing your problems before attempting to enter into a relationship.
