Blog Tour Stop, Guest Blog & Contest: Deep Rising by N.R. Rhodes

Meet Jared Caldwell of Deep Rising:

I’ve been at this gig for a while. Nine years. I don’t know that it was something I aspired to do. As a kid, I wanted to be an astronaut or to study dinosaur bones. Of course that was before I grew up. Before it all went to hell in the Middle East. When I came of age, I’d felt honor-bound to enlist. But something in my aptitude tests hinted at . . . unique abilities. Straight out of boot camp, I found myself working for the CIA.

The schooling was tough. The field experiences were tougher. I’ve been bitten, beaten, shot. I’ve been exposed to evils that make bile rise in my throat at the mere hint of the memories. Naw, this life isn’t pretty. James Bond had a death wish, sometimes I wonder if we all do.

You become numb to it after a while. Not immune to the pain or suffering of others, but just a little callous. Sure, there are good people in the world. I know that. We all know that. Without them, I wouldn’t put my life on the line. I have nieces and nephews. Those kids are the cutest things you’ve ever seen! I love my family. I’d be home with them right now if I could, but then my boss just had to go and call . . .

It’s not like I have any say in the missions I take. Orders come in. I respond. This last call though . . . damn. A new form of warfare is emerging. Some psycho has coordinates for strategically detonating landslides. The end game = mega tsunamis. No, really. Sounded like some sci-fi hogwash to me too. But then I saw the damage. An explosion and a landslide off some Italian island resulted in a wave that decimated the Isle of Capri. What’s worse, there are places on the planet that could trigger another tsunami. The coastlines of the US aren’t safe.

So, I have my orders. Intercept and interrogate the person who outlined these scenarios in their scientific research. Problem is, she doesn’t match the characteristics of a terrorist. She’s smart, a real do-gooder by the looks of her records, and she’s insisting she’s innocent. Worse, there’s something about her. Something sexy and intriguing—and yeah, I know I shouldn’t think of a suspect that way.

Come hell or high water—no pun intended—I’ll find out if Lana is a player in this twisted arms game. I want to believe she’s a victim, that she’s just as invested as I am in preventing another catastrophe. But that remains to be seen. One thing for certain, I’m in way over my head . . .

Title: Deep Rising by N.R. Rhodes
An Outside the Lines Novel
Publisher: Entangled Publishing
Imprint: Select
Genre: Contemporary, Romance
Length: 400 pages

Summary:

In his nine-year stint with the CIA, Jared Caldwell thought he’d seen it all. But when his latest mission instructs him to apprehend a beautiful scientist who’s allegedly linked to a devastating new form of warfare, he isn’t prepared for the prospect of battling man-made tsunamis—or the misplaced feelings he harbors for his number one suspect.

The irony of being accused of crimes her research was intended to prevent isn’t lost on Svetlana Orskya. She also didn’t expect her wish for a strong, sexy man to sweep in and change her life to come true—especially not when he appears, gun in hand, pointed at her.

But time is running out and Jared and Lana must work together to protect the mainland. As the heat between them—and the threat of mass destruction—rises there is more at stake than just their hearts.

Excerpt

Jared pulled a cell phone from the gym bag and zipped it shut again. He dialed the phone. “We’re here,” he said. “Yes, sir. No evidence at this time.” He ended the call. His hand darted so quickly the movement subsisted as only a blur. Catching her arm, he turned her palm over.

Suddenly frightened, Lana tried to withdraw from his unrelenting hold.

“Relax,” he whispered. “I won’t hurt you. I wanted to see if your hands were healing.” He caressed her palm. “Those were some pretty nasty burns you got in Guatemala.” He traced the scabs, his fingertips whispering over her skin. “I have orders to follow if you’re involved. Don’t betray me, Lana,” he warned, in a voice so soft and gentle it made her throat burn. “There are a lot of things I might want to do with you, but causing you pain isn’t among them.”
