Gunsmoke with a Female Marshal

Gunsmoke was a classic western TV show which ran for 20 seasons from 1955 to 1975. I’m addicted to the reruns on the western channel. Even though it wasn’t clear during the TV show I always thought that Marshal Dillon and Miss Kitty got together and lived happily ever after. I’m a sucker for romance!

Maybe that’s why when I started writing GLBT stories I chose to write romance. I wanted my characters to all have their own happy endings. My debut novella The Virgin Madam was released from Decadent Publishing on November 5th. It is a western set in Bitterroot Flats, California in 1879. Bitterroot Flats has a notorious reputation. The town has been run by a gang of outlaws for years. No lawman seems eager to tangle with Sam Fletcher and his boys.

Laura Rutherford, the virgin madam, inherits the brothel after her papa is murdered. She dreams of one of the working women taking her back to their room and… Well, dirty thoughts like that were unnatural. Surely, she’d be alone and trapped in this stinking town for the rest of her life.

That is until a mysterious stranger comes into the brothel asking for a room. Josephine “Joe” Bascum is a cowgirl who knows how to handle a gun and pleasure a woman. Her father is a marshal and taught her how to ride a horse and shoot. When their life together is threatened by the gang of outlaws Joe faces them down.

If no one is going to clean up the town it is up to her!

How would Gunsmoke had been different if Dodge had been tamed by a female marshal? Or maybe aside from a disadvantage when it came to fist fights it might has been much the same.

Another shot rang out.

My eyes widened and I sat straighter in my chair. If there was a second shot….

I bolted to my feet, grabbing the sides of my dress so I didn’t trip, and ran up the stairs. I stared at Ash’s body on the floor in my room. Joe stood beside the corpse, her gun pointed at Bailey.

“That was just a warning shot,” she explained in an eerily calm voice. “I don’t want to have to kill you. Ash drew on me. Don’t make the same mistake.”

All the color drained from Bailey’s face. Even the color of his auburn hair seemed to fade. Bailey’s gaze darted from Ash’s body back to Josephine. “You’ll pay for this.” His voice was gravely and firm. “Fletcher’s going to fill you with so many holes you’ll look like you were killed by a firing squad.”

Josephine grunted. “I’m not concerned about him right now. Just you.” She drilled him with an icy stare and kicked Ash’s pistol out of Bailey’s reach. “Take your gun out of the holster very gently with your left hand, set it on the bedside table, and back away.”

Bailey complied and she grabbed his pistol, tucking it into her belt. “Now sit on the floor,” she commanded.
