What’s up with all the shape shifters?

Shape shifters. Those genetically altered half human-half animal, all sexy creations which seemed to have taken over half the books available right now. Yeah, I’m a sucker for them as well.

No, I don’t watch the television shows with vampires and shifters. I didn’t just jump on the band wagon and threw my writing into the fad. It wasn’t that superficial or recent.

My storyline on the fan fiction site included shifters, vampires, and humans all intermingling. Sherrilyn Kenyon’s site encouraged fans and those that liked to write, to borrow her world, and test out or stories. A decade ago, Sherrilyn was hot, (she still is) but shifters and vampires, not so much. But, to me, they inspired all kinds of potential stories. I took a shape shifter and a vampire and made them my own. From there, the love of beasts skyrocketed. So many options, so many worlds, so many possibilities. The choices were endless and still are.

Shifters have magic. Some can do amazing things like teleport and make clothing appear with a snap of their fingers. Others are more limited with perhaps just the ability to become an animal and that’s it. Perhaps some can’t even do that. They carry the genetics but can’t become a furry creature at all. Each author has their own version of what a shifter can do, the mysterious mating status, what animal he’s mixed with, and how the world around him views these magnificent creatures.

I’ve worked a couple of different versions. The first shifters are known about and they have quite a few magical powers, yet retain some downright cute human traits. Combine the instincts, the alpha qualities, and the sheer sex appeal of a shifter and, voila, you have one hot tamale of a guy. With Mr. Eye Candy established, it’s just a matter of where he goes, who he runs into, and how horny he is along the way. I love shifters with a sex motor that won’t quit, a chip on their shoulder, and a soft heart.

My other version revolves around shifters who aren’t known about and fiercely guard their existence to the end. Fear of becoming some human’s lab rat gives all shifters common ground, though not all get along. These are my M/M erotic romance characters, who are hard, horny, and handsome to the nth degree. Triad, my September release from Totally Bound is a perfect example. Alphas are in charge kind of men who bristle with any potential challenge, yet they soften around the man of their dreams. Life isn’t easy for any of these guys. They have to juggle pack status, threats to their kind, and tracking down villains along the way. I love these ‘in your face’ kind of guys who won’t back down for anything, lay it all on the line, and only reluctantly show their marshmallow insides. To me, they are captivating and so deserve to have their stories told. For it seems like they have it all, money, status, family, looks, and a ton of playmates, but everything is never as it seems.

That’s why I love shape shifters. They are never what they appear to be.

Author Bio

Growing up in the Midwest, I began reading romance novels in high school, immediately falling in love with the genre, to the point where I decided to write professionally for a career. However, that dream splattered against a brick wall, resulting in a quick death in my first writing class in college when my professor told me bluntly that I wasn’t any good at it. I shifted gears quickly, and left my writing dreams behind, eventually settling on becoming a nurse.

A few years back, I stumbled across a fan-fiction writing site on a favorite author’s webpage. I began to read stories others wrote, not only making some wonderful close friends from the experience, but also, really learning to write for the very first time. Here I was able to share short stories, practice my writing skills, and truly develop into a writer. More than that, the experience allowed me to revitalize my dream, as I rediscovered joy in writing. Now, I spend my days off with my alpha male characters, quick witted heroines, and see how much trouble everyone can get into.
