In a land unforgiving of indulgent, dangerous sex, merchantman Eryn does his best to keep his desires in the dark…until the plight of a beautiful prince leads him out of the shadows and into adventures both sensual and terrible.
Capture, curse, and torture litter Eryn’s road to true love, along with carnal delights beyond his most wicked imaginings. His strengths and limitations are exposed—and the hard truth, that nothing holds him back more than the monster of self-loathing in his heart. Prince Wyn might be everything he’s dreamed of in a man—and master—but before Eryn can accept the exquisitely wicked affections of his one true love, he must first save himself…from himself.
This novella was originally published under the title Sweet Son and has been significantly revised.
“You are here to be punished for disobeying me.” The pasha picked up a teacup from the table beside him and sipped at it. “Tell me, slave, what transgression you have committed.”
That was a simple task. “I am unworthy, Master.”
Something hissed through the air, and Eryn gasped as sharp pain exploded across his shoulders. The pasha set aside his teacup and leaned forward on his elbows.
“Impudent boy. You are here because I gave you an instruction you refused to obey. We are not here to indulge your whims, your delusions, or your pleasures. The latter would have come, but you made it clear you wished to be disobedient instead. Unless you take pleasure in defying me?”
Eryn’s stomach lurched. “No, Master.”
“I promise you, if that is a lie, I will cure you of that pleasure quickly enough.”
“It isn’t a lie. I don’t wish to defy you.”
“Then follow my instruction, and we can spend the day in pleasure. Tell me, Eryn Loretti, that you are worthy of receiving pleasure.”
He knows my name, though I did not tell him. Eryn exhaled on a shudder.
The pasha’s gaze narrowed dangerously. “Do as you are told. Tell me you are worthy of receiving pleasure.”
Eryn shook his head. “I cannot lie to you.” I cannot say those words.
“I am ordering you to say those words, whether you believe them or not. I have decided you are worthy of pleasure. You are my slave. I will have the words. Now.”
Eryn shook his head so hard his neck cut into the wood of the stocks. “I cannot.”
“Arrogance.” The pasha stood, cold fury radiating from him. “Impudence, conceit! You say you are my slave, but you keep another master. You surrender to your fears, but not to me.”
Eryn quaked at the pasha’s displeasure, but he could not obey. “It isn’t a fear, Master. It is the truth. I am unworthy. I am unclean and wrong. My family has said so. All my friends have deserted me. The men who used me, they told me as well. Even the palmists saw it when they looked at me.”
“I have told you none of these things matter now, only what I say. You let these fools into your heart, but not me, who promises to help you.”
Eryn faltered. Was that what he did?
The pasha stepped close enough to touch Eryn, but he did not. “Say the words. ‘I am worthy of pleasure.’ Even if they taste like lies in your mouth, I will have them from you now.”
Eryn tried, but the words would not come. Tears ran down his cheeks. “I cannot.”
Heidi Cullinan has always loved a good love story, provided it has a happy ending. She enjoys writing across many genres but loves above all to write happy, romantic endings for LGBT characters because there just aren’t enough of those stories out there. When Heidi isn’t writing, she enjoys cooking, reading, knitting, listening to music, and watching television with her husband and ten-year-old daughter. Heidi also volunteers frequently for her state’s LGBT rights group, One Iowa, and is proud to be from the first midwestern state to legalize same-sex marriage.
