Friday Feature & Giveaway: Hammer and Bone by Kirby Crow

hammer ban

For today’s stop on the Hammer and Bone virtual tour, Kirby Crow answers a few “get to know you” questions.
Kathy: Do you have a favorite book or author you like to recommend? Do you have a comfort read?

Oh wow. I have so many favorite authors it’s not funny. I tried to count them once and I put them all here:  http://kirbycrow.com/faq.html

Lately though – Mark Lawrence, Christopher Rice, Chuck Wendig, and Elizabeth Bear.

Kathy: What is your guilty pleasure?

Vintage romance novels, yaoi comics, Viking movies, Happy Meals, Coca-cola. Oh,  just one? Ha! No. Life is too big for just one guilty pleasure. If you don’t have at least 2, go out and acquire more. Borrow them from your friends if you have to, they won’t mind.

Kathy: Favorite meal?

Fresh onion rings with a side of homemade ranch dressing. I’m an onion ring snob.

Kathy: If you weren’t a writer, what would you be?

An artist. But I’m already an artist, so… probably a game developer. I like working with game engines as a hobby, but I could see myself getting sucked into it as a job.

Kathy: If you could time travel, what time period would you visit?

I’d want to go some place where everyone else would be just as clueless as me: the future. I can read about the past any time.

Kathy:  Can you tell us a little about Hammer and Bone?

It’s a wicked collection of dark stories (8 of them) that at first appear not to be related or have a unifying theme, but they do, and the further you read, the more apparent that pattern will be.  All the stories are genre (paranormal, dark fantasy, steampunk, Southern gothic), and most of the main characters are non-white.  It’s not exactly LGBT romance, but there’s plenty of that in there, too.

I’ve heard it will keep you up at night.

Kathy: What projects are you working on now?  Any other projected releases for 2015?

Plenty! The King of Forever is up to bat next, which my fans have been extremely patient for.  I’m working hard on final edits there. Poison Apples (another collection), and Malachite, a speculative fantasy about an island city populated entirely by men.

Thanks for having me, Kathy!

Kathy: You’re very welcome!  Thank you for chatting with us today and congratulations on the new release!

hammerTitle: Hammer and Bone by Kirby Crow
Publisher: Riptide Publishing
Genre: Paranormal,Steampunk, Urban Fantasy, Sci-Fi, Alternate World, Horror, M/M, F/F, Romance
Length: 26 pages/Word Count: 66,700

Summary:

The purest evil lives in the hearts of men.

Carnival mystics. Zombie tribes. Bad magic in the Bayou. Mage-princes, alien cities, and soul-stealing priests. The grim monsters in the worlds of these dark, speculative tales are true horrors, but it’s the people you should fear the most.

People like Michel, a boy pining for his best friend, Ray. But a presence in the swamp calls Michel to avenge another lost love, and he must decide which summons to answer. Or Angelo, a prescient cop who denies his visions until they endanger the man he loves. Or Bellew, an overseer in a shantytown of criminals sheltering a revenant and feeding it from their ranks.

From ruined lands of steam and iron, to haunted Southern forests, to brutal city streets where hope and damnation flow from the same spring, only a few stubborn souls possess the heart to challenge evil on its own terms. Some wield magic, some turn to rage or even love, but the ones left standing will survive only if they find the courage to carve their own paths to freedom.

Even if it means carving through flesh.

I love onion rings, too (Carpo’s in Soquel, CA has amazing ones!)…do you prefer breaded or battered? I think the breaded generally hold up better, though a good tempura batter never hurts…

  6. @Trix
Hmmm… I like them both, actually. It all depends on the skill of chef. And the contents of the batter. Told ya I was an onion ring snob! 🙂 But tempura onion rings sounds amazing.
