2015 Reading Challenge & Favorite Reads

Well, here we are again. Another year has flown by and another Goodreads Reading Challenge has nearly come to an end. So, now it is time to reveal whether or not we met our 2015 Reading Challenge goal.

I set my goal at 300 books and much to my surprise, I have surpassed that goal by a good number of books.

(Please feel free to friend me).

Although I beat my goal by a wide margin, I am still going to play it safe and stick with 300 books for the 2016 Reading Challenge. You just never know what life has in store and I’d rather set the goal too low than too high.

Now for the hard part: picking my favorite reads from the past year.  It took A LOT of consideration, but I finally managed to narrow it down to:

Young Adult

what weTitle: What We Saw by Aaron Hartzler
Publisher: HarperTeen
Genre: Contemporary, Young Adult, Fiction
Length: 336 pages

Summary:

Critically acclaimed memoirist Aaron Hartzler, author of Rapture Practice, takes an unflinching look at what happens to a small town when some of its residents commit a terrible crime. This honest, authentic debut novel—inspired by the events in the Steubenville rape case—will resonate with readers who’ve ever walked that razor-thin line between guilt and innocence that so often gets blurred, one hundred and forty characters at a time.

The party at John Doone’s last Saturday night is a bit of a blur. Kate Weston can piece together most of the details: Stacey Stallard handing her shots, Ben Cody taking her keys and getting her home early. . . . But when a picture of Stacey passed out over Deacon Mills’s shoulder appears online the next morning, Kate suspects she doesn’t have all the details. When Stacey levels charges against four of Kate’s classmates, the whole town erupts into controversy. Facts that can’t be ignored begin to surface, and every answer Kate finds leads back to the same questions: Who witnessed what happened to Stacey? And what responsibility do they have to speak up about what they saw?

National Book Award finalist Deb Caletti calls What We Saw “a smart, sensitive, and gripping story about the courage it takes to do what’s right.”

Readers of Jan Karon’s Mitford series and Patrick Taylor’s Irish Country series will fall in love with Jeff High’s funny, heartfelt Watervalley series.

After a rocky start as Watervalley’s only doctor, Luke Bradford has decided to stay in town, honoring the three-year commitment he made to pay off his medical school debts. But even as his friendships with the quirky townsfolk deepen, and he pursues a romance with lovely schoolteacher Christine Chambers, several military veterans’ emotional wounds trigger anger and unrest in Watervalley.

At the center of the clash is the curmudgeonly publisher of the local newspaper, Luther Whitmore. Luther grew up in Watervalley, but he returned from combat in Vietnam a changed man. He fenced in beautiful Moon Lake, posting “Keep Out” notices at the beloved spot, and provokes the townspeople with his incendiary newspaper.

Most Surprising Read

I did not review this one, but it caught me so off guard that I HAD to mention it! I absolutely CANNOT wait for the next book in this delightful series.

subs clubTitle: The Subs Club by J.A. Rock
The Subs Club Series Book One
Publisher: Riptide Publishing
Genre: Contemporary, M/M, BDSM, Erotic, Romance
Length: 297 pages/Word Count: 74,400

Summary:

A year ago, my best friend Hal died at the hands of an incompetent “dom.” So I started the Subs Club, a private blog where submissives can review doms and call out the douche bags.

A perfect example of the kind of arrogant asshole I mean? The Disciplinarian. He has a pornstache. He loves meat, stoicism, America, and real discipline. And he thinks subs exist to serve him.

But . . . not everything about him is awful. His Davy Crockett act just seems like a cover for his fear of intimacy, and part of me wants to show him it’s okay to get close to people. And, I mean, sue me, but I have fantasized about real discipline. Not role-play, but like, Dave, you’re gonna be thirty in four years and you still work in a mall; get your ass in gear or I’ll spank it.

Not that I’d ever trust anyone with that kind of control.

I’m gonna redefine “battle of wills” for the Disciplinarian. Or I’m gonna bone him. It’s hard to say.

I never make my goal. LOL! I’ll try again but life seems so crazy I may have to make a small goal this year. I did request a couple of your books you recommended from the library. Especially the one about the Steubenville Rape Case since I literally live 10 min from Steubenville and work in Steubenville. Can’t wait to read that one.

That book is absolutely amazing. I had to look up the case after I read the book. Mindblowing that things like that happen.

Good luck with next year’s challenge!

  4. Sue

I set a target of 400 – currently at 366 so may make 370 BUT I did do a lot of rereads without changing date read to this year so I will be over target by a few!
