Summary:

Only one pair of boots—and the cowboy wearing them—can get Annie out of the mess she’s in.

Annie Wilkerson is Moose Creek’s premiere horse trainer and equine columnist for Montana Living. Money is tight as she tries to put her kid-sister through college and provide for her young nephew. When Annie’s column is cancelled, she’s given first shot at a new lovelorn column—and she can’t afford to turn it down. Only problem is . . . Annie’s never been in love.

Always resourceful, she reluctantly strikes a deal with the town’s smooth-talking ladies’ man Dylan Taylor: She’ll work with his ailing horse, Braveheart, if he’ll help her answer the reader letters.

Working closely with Dylan is harder than Annie imagined, and she quickly realizes she may have misjudged him. But her unwavering conviction that cowboys are nothing but trouble has kept her heart safe for years. And she can’t risk getting hurt now.

The more Annie tries to control things, the more they fall apart. Her feelings are spinning out of control, and her sister’s antics are making life increasingly more difficult. Annie knows she needs to turn the reins over to God, but surrender has never come easily.

When Dylan reveals his feelings for her, Annie doesn’t know what to trust—her head or her heart. The trouble with this cowboy is that he might just be exactly what she needs.

The Review:

The Trouble with Cowboys, Denise Hunter’s final installment in her Big Sky Romance trilogy, is a sweet romance that teaches a valuable lesson about judging people on their own merits not the actions of others. The other themes of letting go of fears and the importance of putting faith in God will also resonate with readers.

Annie Wilkerson is a strong, independent young woman who is also stubborn, judgmental and controlling. She is her own worst enemy and I despaired of her ever getting out of her own way as she fights her feelings for Dylan Taylor. After watching her mother get her heart broken by cowboy after cowboy, Annie arrives at the conclusion that NO cowboy is trustworthy despite some overwhelming evidence to the contrary.

Dylan is a fabulous character whom I absolutely loved. He is good looking, charming and he loves flirting with the ladies. He has quite a reputation as a ladies’ man, but as Annie discovers, appearances are often deceiving. Dylan has good reason for keeping his relationships light and commitment free. I like that he is willing to take a chance on love despite the fact that he was deeply hurt in the past.

The secondary storyline with Annie’s sister Sierra is incredibly frustrating. Lack of communication is a huge problem for both Annie and Sierra. Sierra refuses to be honest with Annie which in turn contributes to Annie’s inability to trust Sierra’s judgment. They are continually at odds over Sierra’s future and the harder Sierra tries to make her own decisions, the more convinced Annie becomes that she knows what is best for Sierra.

However, in the end, all of my frustration and irritation with Annie faded away when she finally gets some much needed advice from Miss Lucy. She realizes God is the one who is control and that she needs to have faith that things will go according to His plan.

The Trouble with Cowboys is a delightful novel with realistic characters and a heartwarming romance. It is a well-written story with a few unexpected twists and turns. Fans of Big Sky Romance series will be delighted with this final installment of the trilogy.

The Trouble with Cowboys is my first Denise Hunter novel, but it certainly won’t be my last. I have already ordered the first two books in Big Sky Romance series and I cannot wait to read them!
