Excerpt

Droje could not allow himself to be taken alive.

But he also could not permit Larke to die at his side.

This was a mistake. What would Gar and Fel say when he showed up with Larke in tow? And what about Zerne? Droje hadn’t thought this through. He’d been drunk on Larke’s lovemaking, on his kindness and the beauty of his face and body. Droje was foolish and weak to allow Larke to come along in the first place. He needed to go back to his old life where he’d be safe.

Except, his old life wasn’t safe. Larke was a drake, and not an inconspicuous one. He stood a good chance of exposure and arrest simply by virtue of who he was. Still, those were all chances, possibilities, and they faded in the face of the imminent danger Droje had placed Larke in. He opened his mouth to say Larke had to go back.

“Wait here a moment,” Larke whispered. “Let me check if the coast is clear. My face isn’t plastered all over Corpnet.” He smiled at Droje and kissed him.

“Larke. You have to—”

But Larke had already darted ahead. He poked his head out from the alley and looked up and down the street. “Now,” he said and crossed, moving briskly, but not running. Good. Running attracted attention.

Droje followed him. When they reached the alley on the other side of the street, Droje caught up to him and grabbed him by the arm. “Wait. You have to go back.”

“Did you forget something?”

“No. I mean you can’t come with me. You have to go home now, before it’s too late.”

Larke drew back. “Is this because of what we just did? I’m sorry. You’re right. It was reckless. But it won’t happen again. I’ll wait, like you.”

“You still have to go back.”

The light in Larke’s eyes turned cold. “Why?”

“It’s just too dangerous.”

Larke yanked his arm free from Droje. “Staying is too dangerous. You pointed that out before we left the apartment.”

“That’s different.”

Larke leaned in, scanning Droje’s face with his blue eyes. “No. It’s not. And I’m not giving up my chance at freedom just because you’re afraid.”

The set on this guy. How could someone be such a submissive in bed and so willful the rest of the time? But it was that very combination of softness and strength that made Larke so irresistible.

“Besides, you can’t stop me.” Larke stood with his arms folded, one hip thrust out. His defiance awoke the desire Droje had only quelled moments ago.

Droje took a step closer. “Oh no?”

Larke met him. They stood so close Droje felt the heat of Larke’s body.

“What are you going to do? Drag me back to my apartment? We’ll attract notice for sure that way.”

Droje sucked in a deep breath and forced himself to step back. He could not let himself get distracted again.

“Or will you just beat me up and leave me here the way I found you?”

Droje’s arousal fled. He spun away from the man. “You know I’d never—”

“I don’t know you at all. And you don’t know me. But unless you want to get better acquainted in a holding cell in Corp Sec, we’d better keep moving.” Larke took off down the alley, even though he had no idea where they were going.

Incredible. Droje swallowed his curse and followed him.
