Why The Protégé Series is Dedicated to Survivors
By Kailin Gow

The Protégé is not what it seems. This is a highly erotic book that is sensually stimulating but contains a plot that explores the psyche of love…and obsession.

I had deliberately set out to break formula with what is currently out there in adult contemporary and erotica. Fifty Shades of Grey has set the standards for these genres in so many people’s minds. Before Fifty Shades became the massive bestselling phenomenon it was, only a closet full of erotica-loving women readers read books about kink or anything considered “alternative adult” so everything in those genres were being compared to Fifty Shades. Why not? It’s the most well-known book out there right now with those themes.

I spent years talking about and writing books dealing with themes of love, relationships, dating, self-esteem, bullying, and women’s issues. Being in a kinky all-consuming relationship falls into this, as well, and when I talk to women in person about how steamy some of my books are, I would see a gleam in their eyes, that told me, they wanted to know more. The Protégé is my first foray into Adult Contemporary/Erotica. Sex is a major part of the storyline as it has a lot to do with the psyche of the main characters. Serena Singleton seems like a typical college student attending a music composition program at school, but she is not what she appears to be.

Who is she based on? She’s a composition of real women I know. She’s the college student friend who worked with me during my college years, at the college newspaper, got straight A’s, and wanted to be a doctor…and stripped at night to pay the outrageously high college tuition. She’s my virgin roommate in college who got into an all-consuming relationship with a man a little older than her, and was an insanely rich playboy. She also inspired one of my other characters – Samantha in Saving You Saving Me.

But also, Serena Singleton, is based on real women who I met and talked to who had been in a relationship with a man who they thought they loved, but which had turned abusive. The Protégé does not have the abuse clearly stated in the book. It is subtle. It is definitely not apparent. The reason why is that The Protégé and The Innocent is from Serena’s point-of-view. If there is any abuse, she is not aware of it…until she is made aware of it…but it may be too late.

Without giving away any spoilers, The Innocent, will push the boundaries. It is not tame. It is not meant to fall neatly into a certain formula. It straddles multi-genres because of the different elements in the story. It is deliberate to stay true to the psyche of Serena’s mind. She will need to be pushed to get further. Along the way, she will be experiencing some of the most amazing sex a woman can experience, as the men who must have her, fight to have her.

I hope you enjoy the journey!

Sincerely,
Kailin Gow
