Saturday Spotlight & Giveaway: Sacred Hearts by Dev Bentham

Sacred Hearts is a Hanukkah story in which much of the action takes place in Puerto Vallarta, a kind of gay mecca on the Pacific Coast of Mexico. I live in a very cold place, so I loved the idea of setting a Hanukkah story someplace where sex on the beach in December sounded hot and wouldn’t involve frostbite.

beachEven in peaceful Puerto Vallarta, there are two Mexicos, the one built for tourists and the workaday world of the people who live there full time. It feels like there’s a long distance between dinner on the beach with white table clothes and a hole in the wall tortilla factory, but in a vacation area only a few blocks separate the two. Because David is a gringo fluent in Spanish who’s working in the hospitality industry, he gets to bridge those two worlds.

kitchenI spent some time in Puerto Vallarta and I fell in love with both worlds. Who wouldn’t want to wiggle their toes in warm sand and splash around in the waves? Or drink a refreshing beverage while watching seabirds peck the sand? But I have to say that the stack of warm tortillas I bought at this little tortilleria was some of the best comfort food I’d ever eaten. And even with my bad Spanish I was able to order them by the kilo to bring home with me. Even cold and no longer fresh, back in northern Wisconsin they were a reminder of the warm wonderfulness of Puerto Vallarta.

Sacred Hearts was first released by Loose Id in 2012 as part of my Tarnished Souls series – a group of loosely connected, stand-alone novels, each centered on a different Jewish holiday. I’m rereleasing it in time for Hanukkah and as my gift to everyone, it’ll be on sale for only $0.99 through Hanukkah (which ends on 12/24 this year). Here’s wishing everyone a wonderful warm and loving holiday season.

Summary:

Life’s a gamble. And David’s partner has lost so much at the blackjack tables that David is forced to close their restaurant, the hippest little place in Portland. He sells everything and moves back home. But at thirty-five, he’s not eager to sleep alone in his childhood bed. He needs to start over, maybe with someone like the elusive man who keeps showing up in his dreams. An old friend offers David a job catering a movie set in Puerto Vallarta. He stuffs his few remaining possessions in a backpack and takes the next flight down.

All he has left are his dreams. And what dreams they are—tall, dark, and luscious. As Mexico prepares for Christmas, David lights Hanukkah candles, celebrating the return of the sun and wishing for true love. On the first night of Hanukkah, David meets a tall, dark stranger who rocks his world in a secluded moonlit cove. Is this the mystery man of his dreams—the answer to David’s prayers or just another illusion? To find out, he’ll need to gamble everything, even the dream of true love.
