Friday Feature & Giveaway: The Best She Ever Had by Shelly Ellis

For today’s stop on The Best She Ever Had virtual tour, Shelly Ellis answers a few “get to know you” questions for us.

Kathy: What book do you recommend everyone should read? Do you have a comfort read?

I don’t know if I would have one book that I would have everyone read because I know tastes vary. (Some people love romance. Some hate it. Some would rather have their teeth pulled than plop down and crack open a book of heavy literary fiction. Some people find those books inspiring.) I have books that I like to read over and over again. I’m a big fan of Beverly Jenkins and Wild Sweet Love is one romance I can once a year. The same goes for the MacGregor Brides by Nora Roberts.

Kathy: What is your guilty pleasure?

My guilty pleasure is cheesy horror movies. My husband rolls his eyes when I watch them but there is just something about being scared to death for the hour and half you watch a film and then the movie is over and everything is right again. I love the experience.

Kathy: Favorite meal?

There used to be a restaurant in downtown D.C. called Ceiba that specialized in Cuban fusion food. (It closed in September.) They made these amazing empanadas that were so hearty and flavorful. I could have eaten them every day.

Kathy: If you weren’t a writer, what would you be?

I’d be a crazy person. Seriously, I’d be crazy; I have to write! I played with the idea in college of being a civil engineer or a computer scientist. I studied them both and I didn’t do very well in those fields. My mind is the mind of a writer. I have stories in my head that I need to get out. I love, love, love words. But I guess if I had no other option, I would probably be a history or poli-sci professor. I’ve always been fascinated with history, culture, and the inner-workings of political systems.

Kathy: If you could time travel, what time period would you visit?

This is going to sound like a boring answer, but I think I’m OK with the here and now. I love history but I don’t have a romanticized view of the past. I could pick a time period like the 1800s but that’s before penicillin, the women’s rights movement, and emancipation. That may not be very fun to be walking around for a gal like me. I could try the future but there are way too many unknowns on a global stage that makes me wonder what the future is like. Again, I’m OK where I am.
