Tour Stop & Giveaway: The Other Side of Winter by G.B. Gordon

Hi everyone,

I’m thrilled to be here and especially thrilled about the reason I’m here: Bengt and Alex are back with The Other Side of Winter. Some of you wanted to know a bit more about what happens between the two books, so I’m taking the opportunity to give you some glimpses into that year the guys spent apart from each other in a series of intermezzos over the course of this booktour.

SPOILER ALERT! A warning for those of you who’ve NOT yet read Santuario: since these scenes are set after the first book, there will, of course, be spoilers.

Thank you for having me,
G

Bengt leaned against the post to make sure it stood firm, then grimaced at the sign. He hated having to put it up, but he hated reporters showing up on his doorstep at all hours even more. Over the last few months he’d given the papers every piece of relevant information he had. And his opinion, sometimes scathing, on top of that.

A diplomatic delegation had been dispatched. They might currently be residing in a hotel suite, but still. The Þing had voted, visas would be issued, end of his involvement. His private life was definitely none of their business.

He threw his tools in the trunk and drove back up the lane that was his driveway to the house.

He was closing the door to the shed when Svenja’s red city cruiser came up the drive. “Am I going to get shot, now,” she yelled out of her window before pulling to a stop.

Bengt gave her the finger, but held open the door for her. “Fucking reporters,” he grumbled.

Svenja shrugged. “Things would never have moved as fast without the papers.”

“They don’t know when to stop,” he groused as he let them into the house.

“Give them a few weeks until something more interesting comes up. I just read the details of the vote results in the paper myself. So no seat in the Þing yet, eh? Are you disappointed?”

“Not really.” Bengt led the way into the kitchen. “Beer?”

“Juice for me, I can’t stay long.”

“The stipulation makes sense,” he said, picking up their discussion again. “As long as they don’t have democratic elections on Santuario, a seat in the Þing torpedoes our own process. Still …”

Svenja cocked her head at him in an unspoken question, and he shrugged. “I just don’t see the patrones giving up power because we ask nicely. This could take a while. And it won’t be done with a peaceful protest.” Bloody civil unrest was the last thing Alex needed, but whether it could be avoided, Bengt had no idea.

“Talking of peaceful protest,” Svenja said. “I expect this weekend’s rally is not happening now?”

“Oh fuck, I should call the city and cancel that.” He fished out his grip and wrote a reminder to himself.

“What are you going to do with all your free time now? Catch up on reading?” She winked at him, but he couldn’t find it funny. The more time he had, the more he worried about Alex. What he was doing, how he was holding up? “I wish I had a way to stay in touch.”

Svenja threw him a puzzled look. Damn, had he said that out loud? “With the cop I worked with when I was on Santuario.”

“Yes. Alex.” She wiggled her eyebrows. “You might have mentioned him once or twice.” Shit. He just hoped he hadn’t been quite that transparent to the reporters. But as his private life and relationships had so far not made it into the papers, he was probably safe. She just knew him too well.

“I’m pretty sure this whole case is costing him his job. So, yeah, I’d like to know how he’s doing.”

What he really wanted to know was whether Alex was safe.

Summary:

Not all wounds are visible.

Skanian investigator Bengt fell in love with fellow policeman Alex Rukow in a week. But that was a year ago, and they’ve been apart ever since. Then Alex escapes the corrupt and destitute island nation of Santuario and comes to live with Bengt. Happy ever after . . .?

Alex’s lifelong dream of leaving Santuario has come true at last. But he finds himself adrift in a society he doesn’t understand. Worse, past nightmares come back to haunt him, and after so many years of suspicion and self-reliance, it’s harder than he imagined to trust someone else.

Bengt just wants Alex to share his comfortable life. But the more he tries to give, the more Alex pulls away. Their physical connection couldn’t be better, but Bengt can’t seem to get through to his difficult, taciturn lover outside the bedroom. Meanwhile, he has his own demons to confront—not to mention a serial killer on the loose.

Bengt and Alex must dig deep for the courage to face their pasts, but it may be too late to save their relationship or their lives.
