Tour Stop & Giveaway: The Silvers by J.A. Rock

Hi! I’m J.A. Rock, and right now I’m touring the internet talking about my latest release, The Silvers. Thanks so much to the blogs that are hosting me on this tour, and be sure to leave comments on the tour posts for a chance to win a $15 Riptide Publishing gift card!

Meet Imms

Imms is an alien. He’s not green or three-eyed or anything. But he’s part of a race of vaguely human-looking creatures dubbed Silvers, from a place humans call the Silver Planet.

Silvers live in clans. They appear to experience certain emotions, but not the emotions most humans think of as “negative”—anger, fear, sadness, disgust, jealousy, etc. Humans initially view Silvers as impassive, docile, and of inferior intelligence—though they discover, upon working with the Silvers, that Silvers do in fact have a complex society. They’re brilliant with numbers, and they spend most of the time tending to their sparse planet. They breed only when necessary to replenish the population.

Imms is unique among Silvers because he bonds so intensely with the humans who visit the planet. He learns their language, and also learns to imitate their emotions. While he may seem innocent, he’s actually quite capable of manipulating things to his advantage—never maliciously, but he’s very perceptive, and gathers a lot of useful information that helps him survive both the presence of unwanted visitors on his planet, and, later, his experience on earth.

Imms’s likes include: fruit, Jane Austen, big cats, Cheez Stix, language, and westerns.

Dislikes include: fire, Cosmic Granola Bars, being alone, being laughed at.

Best party trick: can sink into the ground on the Silver Planet and mimic the planet’s terrain.

Title: The Silvers by J.A. Rock
Publisher: Riptide Publishing
Genre: Sci-Fi, Alternate World, M/M
Length: 346 pages/Word Count: 85,700

Summary:

What humans want from the Silver Planet is water. What they find is a race of humanoids who are sentient, but as emotionless and serene as the plants and placid lakes they tend.

B, captain of the mission, doesn’t believe that the “Silvers” are intelligent, and lets his crew experiment on them. But then he bonds with Imms, who seems different from the others—interested in learning, intrigued by human feelings. And B realizes that capturing, studying, and killing this planet’s natives has done incalculable damage.

When a fire aboard B’s ship kills most of the crew and endangers Imms, B decides to take him back to Earth. But the simplicity of the Silver Planet doesn’t follow them. Imms learns the full spectrum of human emotions, including a love B is frightened to return, and a mistrust of the bureaucracy that wants to treat Imms like a test subject, even if they have to eliminate B to do it.

(Note: This is a revised second edition, originally published elsewhere.)
