Release Week Spotlight: Jackass Flats by Julia Talbot

Hey y’all!

I’m Julia Talbot and I’m here to talk about my book Jackass Flats.

It’s all about Tate, a New Mexico cowboy, and his new thing, Dave, a military man stationed at White Sands Missile range.

Tate is a New Mexico cowboy, born and bred, and let me tell you, those guys are a special breed.

Well, the breed that works in West Texas, New Mexico and southern Colorado. See, these are the guys I grew up with. My Grandpa was one of these cowboys. He was a deputy water commissioner on Grand Mesa in Southern Colorado when you still had to do that job on horseback. He packed in supplies on a pack horse for months at a time, and he test water quality and turned on and off irrigation. He’d go for months without seeing anything but cows and elk.

Let me tell y’all a story.

When I was moving to Texas from Colorado ten years ago, I stopped in Carlsbad to see the caverns there. I ate dinner that night at a steakhouse and bbq place, and I listened to a lot of oil men talk. They were there for a conference, so there were guys from New York and Pennsylvania, California and East Texas.

To a man, they were all bitching about how skinny the cattle were in New Mexico. How did anyone get tasty meat out of those cows? Wasn’t that abuse?

I was staring, just fascinated, when an old feller in cowboy boots and a ball cap came through. He paused when someone asked him, “Hey, old timer, why are all the cows here so skinny?”

He pondered that for a moment, and then he grinned. He said, “Well, we put them on a special diet of pinyon and sage so they taste better. Then we fatten them up at the very end.” He walked off, and damned if the guys didn’t believe him.

The truth is, in grassy pasture such as the areas around Dallas, you can run 3-4 head per acre of cows. In high dessert forage like New Mexico, you need 100 acres per cow or lots of supplemental feed. Ranches in New Mexico can be vast, and everything out there wants to cut, bite, sting, or needle you…

New Mexico cowboys are a special breed. Tate is that breed, and Dave thanks goodness for it every day!

I hope you’ll love Jackass Flats! Thanks for reading!

Can a traveling military man and a set-in-his-ways cowboy find a way to make things work?

Tate feels like the best part of life has probably passed him by, which is why the thirtysomething cowboy hits the bars every night. When he meets Dave, a young soldier from a nearby Army base, though, Tate figures things might be looking up. He and Dave get off to a rocky start, but Tate soon finds that he and the kid have enough in common to make things interesting.

Dave isn’t really into the whole don’t ask, don’t tell thing, and he doesn’t bother to hide his relationship with Tate from his friends. Once he realizes he should have been more careful, it might be too late. But Dave is willing to fight for Tate, even if it means taking on the military.
