Tour Stop, Guest Blog & Giveaway: Midlife Crisis by Audra North

When I first started writing Midlife Crisis, I wanted to tell the story of Cam McGhee, a man in his mid-fifties who is only starting to explore the possibility of living openly as a gay man. But I found that writing about his journey from the starting point of his mid-life was leaving out too much of his experiences that had heavily shaped him as a man.

After a few false starts, it seemed to make sense to write Midlife Crisis in dual timeline, instead. Each experience he has in the “now” is mirrored or explained by one that takes place years before. I think of it, to some degree, as his life “before” versus “after.”

The funny thing was, it took me time to figure out what the turning point was that would allow for a “before” and “after” classification. And in the end, what I realized was I’d already written the answer into Cam’s actions. Talk about subconscious! The turning point is Cam’s choice to live differently. It’s his choice—and in the book, the idea of choice figures heavily into Cam’s day to day living—to move to Austin and be himself that marks the moment in time around which the book is divided.

The process of falling in love with Dave is part of the later journey of his life. Dave isn’t the pivot point. Cam’s choice is. I think, in the end, that makes his relationship with Dave all the stronger, because it was Cam’s conscious, active choice.

Title: Midlife Crisis by Audra North
Publisher: Riptide Publishing
Genre: Contemporary, Gay, Romance
Length: 205 pages/Word Count: 54,500

Summary:

Cam McGhee grew up like any other small-town Texas farm boy: he played football, went to church every Sunday, and married his high school sweetheart. But thirty-five years after he said “I do,” Cam finds himself nursing a beer in a gay bar, thinking about what might have been.

Dave Montoya is confident, self-assured, and cautiously single. But when he meets shy, uncertain, and clearly-still-not-out Cam in a coffee shop in Austin, his reservations about getting seriously involved again disappear. Cam is everything he’s looking for in a partner . . . almost, anyway.

No matter how much Dave wants him, and how good they are together, Cam can’t bring himself to openly embrace the life he was meant to live. After all, when his secret finally gets out, he faces the very real possibility of losing everything that kept him going for the first fifty years of his life, just like he’s feared for so long. But with a little faith—and a lot of love—his dream of living fully, truly, as himself might finally be within reach.

The dual timelines was one of the things that made this an amazing read & like what I said, Cam’s need to come out from the closet should always come from within, the kind of thing that he does first & foremost, for himself. ????

Congrats, Audra, and thanks for the post. As a Texan who came out in mid-life (as you might call it, my own turning point) and now happily married, I can identify with this and am interested in how this story unfolds. – Purple Reader,
