She’s quiet. It isn’t that she isn’t looking at my workstation. She just doesn’t understand the significance. She doesn’t know how I ache for her to know me like I want to know her. I take a deep breath, then dive in. “River, I don’t know your story. I don’t know what you’re running from. There’s so much I don’t know about you, but I know that you matter. You matter to me in a way that caught me completely off-guard, but I don’t regret it even for a moment. I need you to see this, because secrets have a way of festering, and even if they start out innocent, and we think that the only one who will get hurt by them is us, in the end, they affect everything. Like poison.” I never thought being Ian would hurt someone, but every time I hear it from her lips, I feel a little dirtier inside.

I will tell her about Livie. About who I really am, and how I ended up here.

A timer beeps in the kitchen.

River smiles, but a mask has dropped over her face like a shield. “Sounds like that’s our cue to head back downstairs.”

Before I can protest, she’s halfway back to the ladder.

I follow her to the kitchen. I was about to tell her everything, but now it feels like the moment has passed, and I don’t know how to ease back into it again. (pg. 145)

Kelly Walker is a YA and NA author of several romantic titles, including the Souls of the Stones Fantasy Romance series. She has an unhealthy appreciation for chocolate, and a soft spot for rescued animals. Her best lessons on writing came from a lifetime of reading.
